Couture Look with Coverage!

Posted by Unknown |

Sometimes I want to be daring and do something different with my scarf. I've seen lots of tutorials on "couture" style wrapping, but I've noticed that they basically always leave the chest exposed, and sometimes the shoulder too. That's all fine if you are planning to wear a poncho, but if you are not a fan of ponchos (I am not), then you are left with either ruining the style by adding another scarf, or not doing the style at all, which is what I have been doing (mournful frown.)

So, after some playing around with my new plain hijabs, I have invented a little style which is kind of "couture" but also has adequate coverage on the chest, and it only uses one regular sized scarf! Tutorial to follow, if requested.

I've tried it with a printed scarf too, as you can see:

And here is the plain one:

You can also add accessories!

The two headbands were both made by me. The green one with the cherries is actually a necklace, but can be worn as a headband too.

It looks bulky and heavy, but it isn't at all. I'm wearing a bonnet underneath, and I twisted one end of the scarf around the hair in the back to create a "bun," and tucked the tassles in at the back. The tension of the material holds it in place, and I secured the edges with a few pins. You can use brooches instead, for a fancier look. The printed pashmina at the top was a bit heavy since it's a very wide scarf, but the two plain colors were totally comfortable, and I didn't notice the weight. Using a thinner scarf, such as a viscose or polyester one will make the overall result smaller, but it would be lighter for hot weather. The scarf you use for this style should be at least 72" long, or you may not be able to both wrap the bun and get chest coverage. In that case, you would have to use two scarves together.

Salaam Tyas.... about the glasses.... well, when I first started wearing hijab, I wore my glasses inside the bonnet too, and it always made the hair on the side of my face come out, and it made the bonnet too tight. Now I usually put the glasses on after wrapping the scarf, between two layers of the scarf. I usually pin my scarf on each side behind the ear (you can see how in the tutorial I just posted), and when I put my glasses in between the bonnet and scarf, it stays pretty well. If you are still having trouble with your glasses not staying up, you could put an elastic band around your head, and put the glasses under it. The band could go on your head when you secure your scarf, and then you can wrap the scarf around the top to hide it. The elastics look like this: http://jobowtique.com/item_845/Headbands--Elastic-Headbands.htm If you find some pretty ones, then you could put it around the front across your forehead as an accessory. I hope that helps!
