Tryin' a New Thing: "The Thick Band"

Posted by Unknown |

So, partly because I was getting bored and partly because I wanted to wrap my scarf in such a way that it was short in the front (not draped across the chest), I "invented" this wrap. I call it The Thick Band. This would only work with a thin scarf, preferably viscose or cotton weave such as the one I'm wearing in the photos. I suppose you could attempt it with chiffon, but that material is so slippery, I probably wouldn't risk it. I only used 3 pins for this style, and chiffon would probably require at least 5 to hold it in place.

So, what I did was fold the long edge of the scarf and place the crease on my head. I had to do this because the scarf is woven, and therefore rather see-through in a single layer. I had about 8 inches on one side, (or, about a third of the scarf), the rest on the other side. Instead of bringing it back and pinning it behind my neck, I pinned the short side just below my ear, along the side of my face. Then I folded it in half twice. This made the scarf end about 4 inches wide. Then I lifted it up and brought it across the top of my head. With the long end, I again pinned it just under my ear, and brought it around under my chin, then around the top of my head, behind the band. You can see this in the "top" view photo.

Then, I positioned the scarf so it covered the end of the band, and pinned it there. Now, this is the point where you can decide if you want chest coverage or not. I decided not. So I folded the ends in the same fashion, keeping the corner firmly between my thumb and forefinger. I brought it underneath the scarf already around my chin, and placed it comfortably on my shoulder. Then I used a safety pin to pin the part I was holding in my fingers to the inside of my shirt. Voila! All ends tucked in, for a clean, professional look.

Alternately, if you want chest coverage, instead of folding the ends and putting them under the scarf, you can bring one end across and pin it, allowing the rest of the scarf to hang down in a nice v-shape, with the fringe along one side.

I realize I'm again attempting to explain a style using words, so if anyone is interested in seeing this, I can post a tutorial with photos later.
