This is the season when a lot of us are going to get a cold or flu. I know I usually get them in early spring, no matter what I do. So here are some facts you may not know that can help you prevent or deal with your next upcoming cold:
Recent research suggests that a 30-minute walk 5 times a week is just what the doctor ordered when you feel like you are getting a cold. Brisk exercise, no matter how short, helps build up your immune system against infection, and spreads virus-fighting white blood cells more completely throughout your body. So if you feel sneezy, try taking a walk or a quick bike ride.
It turns out that if you sleep less than 7 hours a night, you are 3 times more likely to get a cold. In order to fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer, try turning out all visible lights, don't read or watch TV in bed, and keep your cellphone in your bag, rather than next to your pillow.
There is a brilliant pink flower that is a powerful cold preventer- echinacea. You may not have heard of this herb, but scientists have found that it not only reduces your chances of getting a cold by half, but it cuts the duration of a cold an average of 1.4 days. It's possible to get echinacea in pill form, but it is more potent when brewed in tea.
Not only is echinacea tea a good idea, but apparently so is any hot drink. Research has found that sipping a hot beverage, versus a room-temperature one, gave relief to cold symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, sore throat, and runny nose. For an extra boost, try squeezing lemon juice and honey into hot water.
