Bonnet Cap Blues

Posted by Unknown |

We all know them, the little cotton caps that make pinning up a scarf so much easier. When I first started wearing a hijab, I didn't have any caps and there aren't any Islamic clothing stores in Japan, so before I could order them online, I wore the scarf by itself. It was a struggle and discomfort I was glad to leave behind.

However, now that I've been wearing the tie-back cotton bonnets for a while, I'm starting to have some problems with them. For one thing, the little hairs on the back of my neck and just behind my ears are constantly escaping and coming out the side of my scarf. I find myself reaching under my scarf every two or three hours and smoothing them back. I've tried hairspray, gel, hair pins, everything I can think of. I've even worn two bonnets, one over the other. Nothing really seems to help. The second problem is that if the bonnet is tied too tightly (which helps with the hair escaping), then it pinches the tops of my ears and gives me a headache. If it's too loose, more hair comes out, and the bonnet slides back across my forehead.

I believe the problems are essential to the design of the bonnet, and not the quality of the bonnet, or what it's made of. So, I'm hoping you lovely ladies can offer me some advice- what should I do to handle this mess?

What I'm considering, is buying some of those tube-style bonnets (pictured right- an image borrowed from hijabstoreonline.com) instead of the tie-back ones. Initially, I bought the tie-back bonnets because they were a dollar and a half cheaper. But I guess if the tube ones are more comfortable, then I'd be willing to make the switch and invest in a new repertoire of colors. Does anyone use those tube bonnets? Are they better?

Asalamu alaikum.
I remember when i first started wearing hijab i just wore an aliceband to keep my hair back and then wear a square hijab on top. However wanting to try different styles out i then changed to the tie back bonnets but found the same problem as yourself. I like my hijabs to be secure and neat so for them to be that way i had to tie them tightly. This is not so great if you're working a 9 hour shift : / so those were left to one side. I then used the tube underscarves or the smaller pieces of the al-amirah hijabs and they work perfectly alhamdulilah! Once you slide them back it takes all the hair up with it. No need for any gel/hairspray, clips - nothing!

What i would advise is getting the softer, more stretchy materials though. As the polyester types can be quite small and give you headaches depending on the size of your head. I prefer the cotton ones. So say go for it, they are the best types of underscarves mashallah.

Inshallah this helps (? :) )

I've never liked the tie backs.
I like the amira headbands but in light cotton t-shirt material.
The Egyptian bandana types work well too, and are less material so cooler in the summer.

Sometimes, I just wear one of those thick cotton headbands you can find anywhere. It works well with certain hijabs and again aren't hot.

Vote for the tube ones! I always wear this type as undercap. I like them because they're ear-friendly, they don't make my ears hurt :D
And, they're very cheap here in local stores in my country, cheaper than the tie-backs.. :D
