Hana-Inspired Tutorial (photorial)

Posted by Unknown |

Like me, you probably all know and love StyleCovered, written by Hana Tajima-Simpson. And if you are like me, you have been eagerly awaiting the tutorial for her new look:

I love this style because it is so feminine. For some reason, the folded-over edges really soften the face, making the scarf flattering and pretty in a whole new way. I've been wanting to try it ForEvER!!! So one day I sat down in front of her pictures and studied. Now I think I've figured out how she did this style. Or at least, I've got something similar. Behold!

Step One:
Put the pashmina over your head with one short end and one long end.

Step Two:
Lift the edge of the scarf away from your face, and pull it behind your head, just under your bun.

Keep it nice and loose, don't pull it tight.

Step Three:
Do the same with the other side.

Step Four:
Once you have both ends in the back, secure it with a no-snag safety pin. I've tried this style with just a straight pin, and believe me, it will not stay.

Now it should look like this in the front. The wavy-ness of the scarf around the face will depend on what kind of material the scarf is made of. I think Hana's scarf in the pictures was silk, and mine is a pashmina blend, so they lay differently.

Step Five:
Bring the long end up around your neck. At this point, you can choose to put it over the short end, or you can put it under the short end and let the tassels hang out.

If you want lots of coverage in the front, you can leave the two ends hanging down like this. Or, you can:

Step Six:
Bring the long end around your neck again, over your shoulder.

OR.....

Step Six (variation):
You can leave the long end hanging down, and instead, grab the short end and tuck it under.

Then it looks like this. I'm pretty sure this is how Hana wears it in her pictures, and looks really nice with a jacket or long layered top.

Here is a back view from the side.

And a crazy profile view!

Variation:

As in my previous tutorial, you can do this style with a folded-over edge instead of the rough edge of the scarf.

Step One:
Fold it over at least six inches, or a little more.

Step Two:
Place the pashmina over your head with a short end and a long end.

Steps Three-Five:
As above, bring the edges behind your head and secure them under your bun with a no-snag pin.

Step Six:
Bring the long end around your neck, and in this photo, I have folded the short end underneath.

Step Seven:
THIS IS IMPORTANT!!!
I wore this style with both variations, and much to my extreme embarrassment, in a strong wind, the darn thing blew off the top of my head! I actually walked down the street for a few minutes with my whole undercap showing before I realized it! Eeek! So please, please, get two straight pins like the one above.

Hide the pin behind the folded part at the front. Make sure to pin it to your undercap, so your scarf doesn't fly off in a strong breeze!
