At the moment, I live in Japan. And that, to a certain degree, allows me to be tapped into the scene, both culturally and economically. Since several readers have expressed an interest in knowing more about fashion in Japan (and in Japan in general), I've decided to incorporate a section specifically about particular trends that are so popular, I see them literally everywhere I turn.
I'm not talking about what the fashion magazines, TV, or music channels say is popular, I'm talking about what I see everyone wearing, and how they wear it. Trends that have trickled down to all us "regular" people, and not just designer model wannabes. Styles that work for everyone, and get their influences from the runway and catalogs of famous designers (about whom I am shamefully ignorant anyway).
Since I haven't had the chance to surreptitiously photograph anyone lately, my first post in this section will be internet footage. I probably don't need to tell you that, but I don't want to misrepresent myself. I almost always take my own pictures (as is evident by how many of those pictures are of me!) but when I don't, I think it's fair to say so.
This first piece of interest will be "Maxi Dresses Part One" because there are a slew of store examples I am dying to photograph later, and when I do, that will be called "Maxi Dresses Part Two." In fact, the darn things are so popular recently, I might even make it a trilogy. But time will tell on that one. Anyway, here is a feature from my fav shop, Uniqlo:

I love love love the color graduation in this dress, and I am so buying it, if they have it in stock this weekend. Blue or pink? Or gray? Ahhh, choices......... this is the dilemma that's prevented me from buying it so far. One cannot own a unique piece in more than one color. It's just tacky. So I have to choose one. Maybe the store will only have one left... Yeah. That might happen.

I Need Something....
Buy it here! Some of these shops I have ordered from myself, and some I haven't but have heard good things about. If you have used a shop, then please let me know so I can give it a star rating!

Because: HUGE selection (over 1,000 scarves), fast and reasonably-priced international shipping. Has everything a beginner would need, and is always getting new products, including Mona and Kuwaiti hijabs.

Seems to have a good selection of Al-Amira and Spanish-style caps, as well as some interesting bonnets and scarves.

A nice selection of modest clothing, including jilbabs, tops, cardigans, and maxi dresses. Also hijabs of all types. Offers a monthly contest for a free hijab.

Good selection of reasonably-priced hijab scarves, a wide selection of full-coverage underscarves (called Covering Bandannas on the site), bonnets, and the "bulkyjab," a generously-sized scarf for full coverage with lots of fabric to play with. Order within the UK only, because their international shipping rates are outrageous.

Newly launched modest clothing line by hijabi Hana Tajima-Simpson. A basic collection, but bound for great things. Basics of each item your wardrobe requires- skirts, trousers, polo tops, snood caps, dresses. Pre-ordered items shipped quickly, and were very high quality.

So Alia, did you manage to buy it?
Perhaps that particular maxi dress is already out of stock because I myself bought it 2 months ago. The last time I checked they're already gone. I live in a western suburb city of Tokyo so I think Sumida-ku nara mou nai to omoimasu yo.
Those dresses are all the rage at Old Navy right now. I bought one on clearance. Honestly, I don't really like them. They remind me of night gowns, but when you go shopping with people who are good at pressuring you, you end buy things you don't really like, or will likely wear. Seriously, all I have think of when I see these dresses is women wearing nightgowns that are designed for young girls.
Actually, I didn't buy it. I found it at a Uniqlo in the subs and I tried it on, and it fit alright but wasn't really my style. I want to wear maxi dresses in theory, but they don't really suit me. This was a disappointing revelation.
