Work Outfit.... Or Is It?

Posted by Unknown |

I was super excited to wear this lovely al-amira hijab my husband sent me from Bangladesh. It's navy blue with gold swirls in a kind of bubble pattern, with little navy sequins shimmering throughout. It was definitely my favorite of the hijabs I received (although there are other nice ones to see later!)
In order to match something to this color combination, I wanted an outfit that wasn't based on black. I like black (who doesn't?), but I'm not a fan of when it feels like the entire purpose of the black outfit is to go with a certain accessory. Also, I'm not a fan of black and navy together, it feels too dark.

Fortunately, I found a light brown shirt tucked away in the back of the closet, and threw it with a black vest. All I needed was a skirt, since I was going to work at a cram school (weekend school) and they like things a little formal there. I paired it with a long denim skirt, navy lace socks and Mary Janes. I was feeling quite put together, until I arrived at my school. The front desk staff member eyed my outfit, and sensing her disapproval, I asked her how I looked. She hedged, saying I looked "nice." (Translation- I don't like your outfit.) I looked down at myself, disappointed. She clarified. "Perhaps it is better if you don't wear anything denim," she said. Only at that moment did it occur to me that a denim skirt is still considered "jeans" and therefore not appropriate office attire. Just because it's a skirt doesn't mean it's dressy. Oops.
