Sorry for being MIA for a week, what with all the preparation for HFW, I seem to be stocking all my photos instead of posting them :P So, I decided to do a post about a few recently started companies that you may or may not have heard of. Their philosophy is as cool as their products, and they are all working to modernize the image of the Muslim woman in a positive way by providing fashionable options that still give the necessary modesty. I think they are a great example, and I hope they do a brisk business!
1) Maysaa
I'm sure everyone and their sister has heard of this label already. Fashion designer Hana Tajima-Simpson was my inspiration to start blogging. But in case you somehow haven't heard of her up until now, check it out:
Philosophy:
"A pioneer not only in fashion but in social responsibility MAYSAA is aiming to set an industry standard where people and the environment, from design to delivery are cared for.
At MAYSAA the clothes are always the main focus, with designs that are made to be worn and loved. Maysaa's first collection combines beautiful tailoring and innovative design. From floor sweeping maxi dresses and jersey basics to finely crafted tailored pieces MAYSAA meets every wardrobe need with style."
Price Range:
Prices range from £12-£65, depending on the article. I bought the band snood and chiffon band snood, and found them both well worth the money.

2) Vela
I came across this website when I was watching some You Tube tutorials. I was absolutely floored by how elegant and beautiful they all are, like something out of a dream. Two American-born girls are responsible for bringing this company to life, and I say, I hope it's a long and prosperous one!
Philosophy:
"Vela is a company offering beautiful, unique and fashionable scarves/hijabs and modest clothing for Muslim women. Vela is proud to be the first company to offer designed couture hijabs that offer unique styles with the most recent fashion trends. Marwa Atik is the designer of Vela hijabs and very soon she will also be launching a clothing line."
Price Range:
$13-$40, reasonable considering the hijabs are all handmade with satin, silk, and chiffon material and sequin, ruffle, lace, or other accents.
Most Wanted Items:

Sailor chic, romanticism, and square vintage lavender
3) SixteenR
Truly a company for the independent, this shop has very unique items, in particular, their screen-printed pashmina scarves. Theirs is a style that is sure to make waves.
Philosophy:
"SixteenR was incepted in the philosophy that the scarf can be a tool of empowerment. It can define a woman's presence with power and style. Whether worn as a neck scarf or as a head scarf, it has the ability to transform a woman's appearance.
In today's global, interconnected society, style for the modern Muslim woman is evolving, incorporating fashion from the West while respecting traditions from generations before. The scarf when worn as a Hijab or headscarf is playing a key role in this transformation, defining itself as a sign of beauty and strength, not a sign of oppression and dependence."
Price Range:
$12.99-$17.99, using authentic pashmina, muslin, and gaamcha materials. Pashminas are screen printed with interesting, trendy designs unlike anything else around.
